Patient Insurance Fraud

Identity theft in the medical office
A growing problem throughout the country has been sharing, theft, and counterfeit insurance cards. Physicians who are victims of these scams provide the services and never receive reimbursement. Alternatively, the physician may be reimbursed initially only to find later that the person treated was not the insured party... then comes the dreaded letter from the insurance carrier requesting a refund.
The solution to many of these frauds is to verify patient identity when a patient presents in the office. A copy of the patient’s driver’s license will allow verification of identity and virtually eliminate the risk of fraud.

Physicians who have put this procedure into practice have been able to catch fraud before services are rendered.
